  • PAINTER
  • ROUGHNECK
  • DERRICK-MAN
  • ASSISTANT DRILLER
  • DRILLER
  • TOOLPUSHER
  • RIG MANAGER
  • RIG SUPERINTENDENT

The painter is part of the drill crew and the person responsible for cleansing of deck area and for painting where necessary to upkeep the exterior appearance of the rig. The work is never ending and involves working at heights.

The job tends to be a good solution for those who are interested in entering the Oil and Gas industry but who lack experience in the oil field. An excellent starting point to proceed into other positions!

Responsibilities
- Coordinate paint products and its correct use
- Work according to regulations delegated by the Maintenance Foreman
- Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

Requirements
Painters will most likely hang with safety harnesses from the rig in order to paint the outside of the offshore unit. Therefore he/she must be comfortable working at heights.

Furthermore, a good physical health is a requisition as working long hours outdoors in all weather conditions will be part of day to day circumstances.

On the job, the painter will learn how to manage a needle gun and buffer for painting.

Immediate Supervisor
Maintenance Foreman

As a Roughneck, you will generally work on the rig floor in groups of 3 to execute any sort of duty required for the operation being carried out. The nature of the job is therefore very diverse and will involve working with specialized equipment and machines purposed for drilling, pressure control, etc..

Skills and knowledge will be taught through on-the-job training. Thought, it would be beneficial to have previous background in Electronics and Mechanics.

Responsibilities
- Execute the housekeeping on the rig floor.
- Measuring, picking up, tightening or loosening drill pipes when needed.
- Joining single pipes together and placing them to the Derrick.
- Inspect pipes for inside blockages.
- While drilling, one Roughneck is present in the mud process room at all times. He takes mud weights and ensures shakers and other machines are working properly.
- Proper handling of machines and equipment being used for the drilling operation (e.g. Rig Tongs)

Requirements

Although no previous education is required, this job is great for people with experience in welding and mechanics.

Another requisition for acceptability will depend greatly on the physical condition of the person since the working conditions tend to be tough and physically demanding.

Furthermore, a roughneck is selected based on their concern to work according to company instructions in a safe and efficient manner.

Immediate Supervisor
Assistant Driller/Driller

The entire mud-processing procedures of an offshore installation fall under the concern of a Derrickman. In this position, your efforts will revolve around the management of operations of the mud, the mud pumps and other machines used in the pump room.

Specific knowledge and familiarity on procedures is obtained while working as a roughneck on the floor, under supervision of an experienced derrick-man.

Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain machinery in the mud pumps, in the mud pump holding pits and in the mud pump room (e.g. motors, drilling mud systems, etc.).
- First line maintenance of mud pumps.
- Accurate mixing of chemicals and drilling mud, after measuring mud density and conducting viscosity tests.
- Handle pumping procedures after conducting periodic tests to verify pressure, density, gravity and concentration required.
- Ensure that general operations in the area run smoothly and standards are met.
- Assist the driller in centering, raising and lowering casing, drill pipe and tubulars through the drill floor.
- Provide on the job training to Roughnecks.
- Supervise the work performed by the Floorhand and Roustabout assigned to the sack room.
- In case the pump room is under control, the derrickman may be needed in other areas of the floor.
If the drill floor is too busy, he/she will provide assistance to the roughnecks in drill floor activities; to the driller and Ass. Driller in managing the risers, casing and drill pipe tubular.

Requirements
The toughness of the working circumstances relies on the level of automatisation of the rig itself. On one hand, if pipes have to be handled manually, the derrickman will have to lean out from the rig to reach the pipes in the center of the derrick with a monkeybaord (safety harness) and pull the pipes back into storage location until they are needed to be pulled back into the well. Such activities are performed at heights of 85 ft (26 cm) above drill floor, which will require good physical condition and a feeling of comfort to work at heights. On the other hand, if the rig has automated pipe-handling equipment, the derrickman will control operations from inside a control room.

Regardless of the conditions, duties shall have to be executed in an as safely and efficient manner as possible. For that reason, a safe conscious attitude is essential in fulfilling obligations.

Immediate Supervisor
Assistant Driller/Driller

Subsequent to a Derrickman is the position of an Assistant Driller. Because you will be second in rank to a Driller your main responsibility shall be to support the driller’s duties wherever necessary.

Responsibilities
- Supervise and monitor drill floor’s activities related to the sack room and pump room, by being the direct supervisor of the Derrickman and Roughnecks.
- Assure operations on the drill floor are executed according to safety regulations and to company policies/work instructions. The safety of both drill floor crew as support personnel are included under his/her responsibility.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of drilling equipment and the drill floor structure itself.
- Inspect and test drilling technical equipment and the mechanical cleaning equipment for drilling mud.
- Perform minor maintenance work.
- Contribute to or chair safety meetings and/or pre-shift meetings.

Requirements
The Assistant Driller should be familiar with the duties of every position on the drill floor in order to take the correct decisions. In essence, the requirements for the job includes knowledge on safety working practices, monitoring procedures and crew supervision, besides for an understanding in drilling techniques and systems. Several years of experience as a Roughneck and Derrickman are essential in this case.

The work itself is, generally, very physically demanding since it will entail working outdoors for long periods of time during all weather conditions or working underground. A good physical health is required either way.

Immediate Supervisor
Driller

The one person to assure that drilling procedures run optimal is the Driller. Considered as the Team Leader of the drill floor Unit, the person fulfilling this job is in charge of the entire drilling process, which assures the rig executes its primary function of “retrieving oil or gas by making a hole in the seabed”. The main one in command of drilling!
Responsibilities
- Assure the specifications, goals, budget and objectives of drilling contractor are attained.
- Monitor rig’s activity according to the required company regulations along with statutory requirement, and implement Environmental policies and Health and Safety procedures.

- Assure the safety of the crew on the drill floor and safe working practices.
- Arrange the continual housekeeping in and about the drill floor.
- Assure drilling equipment is operated properly and effective by the crew.
- Maintain and control sufficient stock of machinery and equipment required for regular drilling operations as well as for repairing any drilled holes caused by mechanical breakdowns or natural conditions.
- Operate the automated Driller to run breaks and drill the hole.
- Conduct regular inspections, interpret the outcomes referring to gas and fluids with high pressure and develop administrative records . Provide results to Company Management accordingly.
- In case of emergencies (gas blow out preventer -BOP), take the correct counter measures to stop or control the well.
- Communicate closely with Client Representatives as well as Company Management.

Requirements
A Driller must be familiar with every job description on the rig in order to  take the correct decisions and lead the drill crew in their activities. In essence, the requirements for the job includes knowledge on safety working practices, monitoring and test procedures (e.g. Trend Monitoring, HPHT Finger Printing, etc.), crew supervision, emergency procedures,  pressure systems, drilling fluids, in addition to other drilling techniques.  A good back ground in technical knowledge is fundamental while the Driller is the one to operate the drill equipment. Consequently, years of drill experience working as a Roughneck, Derrick-man and Ass. Driller is a requisition.
The Driller must similarly be fully safety conscious and be responsible for knowing how to implement safety regulations.
The work itself is, generally, very physically demanding since it will entail working outdoors for long periods of time during all weather conditions or working underground. A good physical health is required either way.
